I just made the mistake of having a peek at mozilla.org and pretty much everything I saw there made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. The self-congratulatory circle-jerking, the "AI" criti-hype, need I go on?

But the kicker has got to be the "Owners, not Renters" newsletter ... hosted on SubStack. Apparently Mozilla have the resources to run a Venture Capital fund, but not to host an instance of WordPress or Ghost or whatever for their own newsletters.

Disappointed that #Debian has chosen what seems like the worst possible option in its vote on LLMs.

No acknowledgement of the harms involved in LLM usage; instead, a claim that they ‘substantially improve productivity’. (It claims not to be an endorsement but makes only pro-LLM statements.)

Vague platitudes about using LLMs ‘responsibly’ when it’s become very clear by now that LLM users can’t be trusted to be responsible without constant supervision. And no requirement for disclosure of LLM usage, even.

It didn’t seem likely that the strongest anti-LLM proposals would pass, but it would have been nice to have at least some restrictions put into place.

Instead of fixing the incredibly bad UI, developers going off on an adventure to implement a feature no one wants—it’s a story as old as time with software (doesn’t matter if commercial or open source and free).

Current manifesto topic: The fossil fuel industry is responsible for Crypto, NFTs and LLMs because we already have enough renewable energy to power everything else.

I still hope: That result is not what we call a landslide. Contrary to that, it became clear that many are clearly opposed. Consensus looks differently.

@tess when speaking English with my American friends, I may have my foreign accent but it always crack them up when I use y’all. They don’t understand that it’s not to be folksy, as you say it’s because otherwise I can’t communicate a thing that’s very basic in my own language!

@jaredwhite i really like this idea. Since I only code on my day time job, i have nothing to show for "proving" that i only do code by hand (i don't have the energy / resources to do coding outside of work so there is not really anything from me available outside of that company). Maybe in the future i will have the energy to do something open source and then verify myself but in the nearest future i don't see that.

Anja bought a used ereader (Tolino Page 2) but something was borked. Fortunately, I also have one and the model stores memory on a removable microSD. So I imaged mine and flashed hers.

One of the services I do for my community is to do product research then aggressively advocate for one product: pixel 6a, Casio F-91w, etc.

Such a win for spare parts, software, skills, etc.
